The accidents of mixer trucks on/off roads and at sites are inevitable.

However if you have an accident management plan you can reduce the negative results such as losing time, money, customer, reputation, motivation and also environmental harms, etc. Provided it is not a fatal accident! Otherwise, the issue may become even more complicated.

Accident management means, actions taken in order lessen the mitigate adverse effects of the incidents. The approach to accident management can varies between companies and depends on the nature of company activities, conditions, positions, geography, etc.

There are also several trucking companies that believe the accidents can not be managed because they were occured and will again occur. This belief is completely wrong, all accidents are not fate and happen due to lack of interest, consantration, less maintenance, inappropriate vehicle, load security, etc. Furthermore the statistics show that most accidents occur because of other vehicles on the road.

Nevertheless, the dispatch by mixer trucks, is a critical success factor for the economic viability of any readymix concrete company. And not to be forgotten the fact that any readymix company income depends only on m3 of concrete sold and delivered.

Usefull tools for readymix management…

You are an engineer in a readymix company and look after the vehicle park, do dispatch or work in operation. Any junior manager in the company can see if there is a shortage of mixer truck, but how can you explain this and request for an extra one to the management in technic and business manner before anyone else and in the best way possible?

Management involves making a lot of decisions and these decisions cannot always be easy. This is especially true when those decisions could potentially be critical to your success and your career.

These decisions, therefore, should not be taken lightly. But what is a good way to be able to make such small but important decisions and feel content with the course of action you take? The important thing here is to have details that support an idea or speech you defend. And more importantly, to make it permanent.

Enter cost benefit analysis:
Cost benefit analysis allows you to choose the options that minimize risk while giving you the greatest potential benefit in the see of options in front of you. Using the benefit cost analysis tool allows you to minimize risks and maximize gains giving the best chance to you at being a success.

But, do you know the explanations and parameters effecting to above sample calculation and for other similars or have you ever made such a cost benefit analysis. There are several tools (cost-benefit analysis, swot analysis, management account etc…). These tools will also increase your belonging and commitment to your company.

Do you have a crisis plan?

-You are an engineer and working at production or dispatch. You may face a crisis in an important and large operation. For example, the contractor can reject the concrete! What do you do in such a situation?

-Who may claim that the problem have arised due to this or that reason and department. Or more importantly, who can accept and say that the fault belong to him.

-In the above and similar crisis situations, as a junior manager, you must be able to control your nerves and remain calm and quickly evaluate the things that may happen next. In the meantime, it is important to establish versatile communication and add your own comments to the theirs.

-Have you done a case study or simulation on this subject? If you are not prepared, you can not take action on time. You can offer such a meeting covering all related departments to the management, of course before any crisis have not occured. But first you should be ready for your speech at the meeting!

-Junior managers who do not have enough experience and not take their position seriously can create a chain effect on the employees, leading to a lack of direction, demotivation, a breakdown in communication and trust and for sure create unacceptable and a terrible work environment.

-The term of chain or domino effect is often used for interconnected events such as machine collapse or malfunctions or series of accidents or wrong mix the recipe of concrete and also can be used to predict future events. A chain reaction is the umulative effect produced when one event sets off a chain of similar events.

-Concrete delivery in the summer season or in the hot weather, long distance and tough traffic, long waiting time for mixers at the construction site, fatality accident at construction site, malfunction on batching plant, insufficient inventory, problems at the concrete pump, returned concrete, unpaid money, concrete spill on road rash, etc.

-These are some crisis which may happen anytime at readymix industry. And should definetely be studied according to season, condition and suspection in order to be ready for crisis management.

– You will find some tips and necessary tools how you should act in case of crisis time in ‘Readymix Workshop’. For example, ‘domino-chain effect’ can be a powerful tool to change bad habits.

It all starts with sales and then the wheels turn!

Sales:
-You are an engineer and working at a readymix concrete company as a member of sales force. You represent the company and do business on behalf of the boss. Use the sales skills and turn the opportunities into money!

-Courses on sales and marketing are not taught in engineering education at the universities or only as optional. However, most engineers work in this field after graduation. And the readymix industry is one of these.

After challenging maths and physics subjects, selling are thought to be simple and consist of only customer communications and visits. However, as in every professional field, sales has certain rules, principles and therefore needs training.

Selling is not something that can be learned by being together and going customer with the old salesman! This takes time and leads to repetition and also bad habits. Sales is something dynamic and always renewing.

Marketing:
-The majority of engineers see the marketing as either ‘selling’ or ‘generating customer preference for’ a given product or service.
There is no definite description for marketing. However any company’s marketing activity must include the followings:
– Identifying the needs of exsisting and/or potential customers.
– Forecasting when these needs will arise
– Determining what percentage of the total market could be won over a given period.
– The size of the achievable market share.
– Communicating the resulting policy to everyone in the organization
– Determining the resources and facilities required to ensure that the identified needs can be satisfactorily fulfilled.
-Satisfactorily fulfilment means profit for the supplier and enjoyment of a quality service by the customer.
-Marketing is a science and depends on mostly statistics.

Think and act like your boss and get the positive results:
Because, being a boss isn’t just about making money. It’s about building confidence, thinking outside of the box, problem solving and being fearless. From understanding money and looking after it, to the nuts and bolts of setting up a business, making the big ideas a reality and using cash for good.

Suddenly you can be appointed to a managerial position, but are you ready for this?

Regardless of your profession, if you have an engineering degree and have worked a few years in the readymix industry (at production, in the field, laboratory, machine park, workshop, purchase, sales, R&D, BI, etc.) you can rise to a managerial position on some occasion, with your success, with your stance or with the separation or leaving of someone.
